Detailed Itinerary: Kedarnath
Yatra from Dehradun
Day 1: Dehradun to Guptkashi
The Kedarnath
Yatra will start with an early morning departure from Dehradun at 6:00 a.m.
Your driver will pick you up from either the Railway Station, Airport, or Hotel
and begin your journey to Guptkashi, the base camp for the Kedarnath yatra. You
will travel along beautiful and scenic roads as you make your way through some
of the most picturesque landscapes of Uttarakhand. After your departure, you
will travel through Rishikesh, the spiritual city of India, where the holy
river Ganga flows.
On your way, you
will also pass by Devprayag, the sacred confluence point of the Alaknanda and
Bhagirathi Rivers, where both rivers conjoin to make the holy Ganga. This is a
very significant place for any pilgrim to see, as it symbolizes the union of
body and spirit. Continuing your journey, you will also travel through
Rudraprayag, another important confluence point where the Alaknanda and
Mandakini rivers unite and arrive at the little village of Augustmuni. The
roads you will travel will offer breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayan Mountains,
lush green valleys, and beautiful waterfalls, making this trip a memorable
experience.
You will arrive
at Guptkashi in the evening and check into your hotel to freshen up and get
ready for bed. Guptkashi is considered a very holy location and is located 1319
meters above sea level. Once checked in, make sure to visit the ancient Ardh
Narishwar Temple and the extremely revered Vishwanath Temple to receive your
preliminary blessings for the yatra to the Kedarnath Temple.
Day 2: Guptkashi to Kedarnath
Wake up early at
about 4:00-5:00 AM on the most important day of your pilgrimage. After a filling
breakfast, drive to Sonprayag, and from there take a shared local taxi or walk
5 km to Gaurikund (the place where Goddess Parvati (Gauri) is believed to have
meditated to win the heart of Lord Shiva) to begin your journey to Kedarnath
Village. Traditionally, before you start your sacred journey, you will go to
the hot water springs at Gaurikund and take a holy bath in the natural hot
springs.
After Gaurikund,
you will begin a strenuous 18-km trek to Kedarnath. The well-marked trail will
take you through picturesque mountains, along the rushing Mandakini River,
through thickly wooded areas with dense foliage, and lush valleys. Small tea
stalls/rest stops are scattered throughout the trek, where you can find
refreshments and a brief stop to rest and relax. The trek between Gaurikund and
Kedarnath takes about 6-8 hours, depending on your fitness level and how fast
you are walking. If you do not want to walk, you have the option of taking a
pony, palanquin (doli), or helicopter (for an additional cost depending on the
weather) to reach Kedarnath.
The first thing
you're confronted with when you reach the sacred town of Kedarnath is the
spiritual energy that surrounds the place, plus the stunning view of the old temple
located against a mountain backdrop of the incredible Kedarnath peak. After
checking into your basic accommodation (dharamshala/guesthouse/camp) and
showering, visit. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of
Sadashiva. Watch the mesmerizing evening Aarti, you will be captivated by the
feeling in the atmosphere created by the evening Aarti ceremony, and the spirit
of the evening Aarti, and that spirit will fill you up with more than spiritual
energy, feeling endless and filled with divine energy, because that's how
sacred this temple is.
If the weather allows,
go to the nearby Bhairav Temple, the temple of the guardian deity of Kedarnath;
visit the serene Gandhi Sarovar; and sit and think about how special this place
is. Your time at Kedarnath will be something to remember because you will be
surrounded by towering mountains and the overwhelming presence of the power of
faith. Be sure to wear plenty of warm clothes as it is cold and high in
altitude. Enjoy a simple dinner and get a good night's sleep!
Day 3: Kedarnath to Guptkashi
Awakening at
approximately 4 AM in order to attend the early morning aarti (offering) at
Kedarnath Temple will provide a momentous spiritual encounter in the cool,
uncorrupted surroundings of the Himalayan Mountains. Following the aarti
ceremony, you will then have an opportunity to have "darshan"
(spiritual connection) one last time with Lord Kedarnath, as well as to offer
prayers, perform any remaining religious rituals, and soak up the unforgettable
divine atmosphere. As the soft dawn light shines on the snow-capped mountains
surrounding you, you will have a memory that is imprinted in your mind forever.
After you eat
breakfast, commence your downhill trek back to Gaurikund. Generally, you will
take between four and six hours to descend to Gaurikund; each step of the way
down, you will encounter the same magnificent views, albeit from a different
angle. From Gaurikund, you will drive back to Sonprayag, where you will then
continue to Guptkashi. Descending to a lower elevation after having trekked to
a high elevation gives you relief for your body after having exerted yourself
in the high altitudes. At Guptkashi, you will check into your hotel and recover
from your arduous journey to and back from Kedarnath. You will spend the
remainder of the evening either sharing your experiences with your fellow
pilgrims or resting and recuperating from the day's trekking. At dinner, you
will enjoy a warm meal and get a good night's sleep.
Day 4: Guptkashi to Dehradun
Enjoy a relaxing
breakfast and check out of your hotel, then start back to Dehradun filled with
divine blessings and memories of your sacred Kedarnath darshan. Your drive back
will use the same scenic route through Rudraprayag, Devprayag, and Rishikesh.
If enough time allows, stop to see the world-famous Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula
in Rishikesh, or attend the world-famous Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or
Parmarth Niketan to add another spiritual dimension to your pilgrimage.
The route back
to Dehradun will take you through the beautiful Himalayan foothills, carrying
the peace and blessings of Lord Kedarnath. Depending on when you start your
journey back, you should arrive back in Dehradun late afternoon and early
evening (around 5:00-6:00 PM). Your driver will drop you at your point of
choice for your onward journey (Railway Station, Airport, or Hotel), and from
there will be the conclusion of your sacred pilgrimage of Kedarnath Yatra;
however, the spirit transformation and divine memory of your pilgrimage will
last for all eternity.
